Better Teaching Better Learning

Learning is a complex process. We use a myriad of strategies in our practice, aiming for the best possible learning outcomes for our students. Effective instruction often follows a progression in which teachers gradually do less of the work and students gradually assume greater responsibility. The Gradual Release of Responsibility Framework was originally developed for reading instruction but this workshop explores the elements of this framework in far greater detail and on a much larger scale, identifying how this structure for instruction can work for you.

Knowing when to take responsibility and when to let go, supporting our students to become self-regulated learners is an ongoing struggle. We will unpack a range of pedagogical strategies from prompting and cueing to modelling and demonstrating, and unpack how to use them effectively no matter what learning area you teach and no matter what year level you teach.

We explore types of homework that are most powerful, how to use formative assessment to impact learning and explore a simple questioning framework to support our students achieve the best possible outcomes.
